Relief through Natural Remedies: My Journey with Endometriosis and Painful Periods
Living with endometriosis has been a journey filled with challenges, pain, and uncertainty. For years, I struggled to find relief through conventional treatments, only to face side effects and minimal results.
My quest for better solutions led me down the path of natural remedies—a journey that not only eased my pain but also transformed my approach to managing this condition for my clients.
In this post, I’ll share my personal story of having endometriosis and how I discovered the power of natural healing to regain control over my life.
My struggles with endometriosis & period pain
My periods were always painful. I don’t remember a single time when this wasn’t the case. As a teenager, I used to wake up in the middle of the night in pain, looking for remedies so I could go back to sleep. My mom used to have a Reader’s Digest Book with natural remedies for all sorts of affections, including period cramps. I would take that book and try everything I could, from acupressure, medicinal plants to yoga poses. They provided relief, and I was way too young to realize how impactful those remedies were.
I was told that it’s normal for periods to be painful. My mom had painful periods, my aunt, my cousins, even my grandmothers. Painful periods were presented to me as something I just have to learn how to live with. Only when I was in my early twenties, after years of suffering, fainting because of pain, and missing opportunities, I went for the first time to a gynecologist as it was affecting the corporate tech career I had started. The doctor found cysts on my ovaries, and diagnosed me with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). I was put on birth control, and life was really good for a while. I was able to advance in my career, I didn’t miss meetings or skipped opportunities, I was able to exercise every day. I felt like the sky was the limit!
After 6 years of taking birth control, I started suffering from gallbladder attacks. As I was going through all the investigations, I started to completely change my diet and take targeted supplements.
I was surprised to learn that the birth control pill that helped me so much could cause gallbladder issues. That's when I decided to come off the pill. I don't remember suffering from any side effects but in a couple of weeks the gallbladder attacks stopped and I didn't have to have gallbladder removal surgery.
My period only started to be painful again after a couple of years, which brings us to January 2020 when I had my appointment with a gynecologist in Dublin. She wanted to put me on the pill again, I said no because I had liver issues. The doctor told me that I most likely have endometriosis based on my symptoms. When I asked her what else I can do besides the pill, she told me to look it up on Google because if I don't want to take the pill she cannot help me.
During the pandemic my periods became significantly worse. I had to be on bed rest for up to a week a month. I couldn't exercise as much as I used to. I couldn't lead the life that I used to but well no one could lead the life that they used to in 2020. So I suffered in silence trying again a lot of remedies and not really succeeding to get my pain under control.
This continued for three years until 2023 when I had a general health checkup and I found the GP that sent me to an endometriosis specialist in Dublin who was sure that I had endometriosis even based on a blood marker that I had and I was scheduled for surgery a week after my wedding.
Trial & Error of Natural Remedies
Following the laparoscopy, the biopsy results gave me the endometriosis diagnosis I was expecting. It felt surreal to finally have an answer to my symptoms, but also quite helpless because of the lack of treatment there is. I was told to get pregnant as soon as possible “to cure my endometriosis”.
I was still taking a progestin-only pill, and the side effects were horrible (mood disorders, intrusive thoughts, weight gain, acne). And guess what?! I still had painful periods, and significant cramping! It was crushing to have an abdominal surgery, take treatment, and still have the same symptoms
"There's gotta be a better way" - Joey Tribbiani playing Kevin :)
That’s when I decided to stop taking the pill, and investigate more what can I do to stop having period pain. I already finished my nutrition studies years ago, and I just graduated from my advanced herbalism course. In the words of Joey Tribbiani who couldn’t open a carton of milk: “There’s gotta be a better way!”
My herbal collection took over a quarter of my small kitchen storage. My supplements had their own shelf in the fridge. I was determined to find what works!
After a couple of months, I did it. My period pain started to be significantly reduced, the length of my cycle was 28 days (beforehand it was 20-22 days), and my endometriosis symptoms were very mild.
