"Get Your Greens" Smoothie

Are you really a wellness entrepreneur until you post a green smoothie recipe?

I’m definitely joking. I love smoothies even though I prefer my food and snacks to have a bite to them.

I prefer smoothies during summer, made with fruit and veggies cold from the fridge - yumm.

During my first nutrition studies, our teacher was saying to “juice your veggies, smoothie your fruit” and to “stick to the same colour palette”.

“Juice your veggies, smoothie your fruit”

It’s no secret to anyone that fruit is high in fructose, a delicious sugar that feeds our bodies and energy. Fruit has most of their nutrients in their flesh and skin. If you strip fruit to juice, you also get rid of the fibre that is so necessary for our gut microbiome. I love a freshly squeezed orange or apple juice as much as the next person and I do enjoy a glass every now and then. If you do have the possibility to blend fruit into smoothies instead of juices, I recommend you consider this option.

There are a couple of veggies that we get the nutrients from easier (or all of them if we’re talking about wheatgrass) by juicing them. The carotenoids from carrots are more available by juicing carrots and adding a bit of fat (like flaxseed oil) to it. Most athletes heard about the benefits of beetroot juice in enhancing performance and overall recovery after workouts. I don’t own a juicer and I haven’t decided if I’ll get one when I move to the new house. If you have the possibility to juice your veg, do it. If not, you can still add them to your smoothies? Which leads me to the next topic.

“Stick to the same colour palette”

How many times have you made a smoothie or juice that looked like mud and did not taste very good? Yes, me too. The secret to beautifully coloured creations is to stick to the same colour palette (for a green smoothie - check my recipe below and for a red smoothie - stick to red fruit and veggies). The white/yellow-sh fruit and veg do not alter the overall colour, so you can use them with a bit more freedom when making smoothies or juices.

Some of you are reading this bit to get to my green smoothie recipe - you can enjoy it below!
